Leadership
Leadership begins before the title.
Leadership is influence created through character in action. It happens in a marriage, as a parent, at work, during conflict, in ordinary moments — long before anyone gives you permission to lead.
Seven Questions
The questions leadership keeps asking you.
Character
Who are you?
Influence
What happens to the people around you?
Courage
Will you do right when it costs something?
Humility
Can you admit when you're wrong?
Service
Are you useful to others?
Discipline
Can your behavior stay aligned with your values?
Responsibility
Do you own your impact?
Behind the Badge
Authority and leadership are not the same thing.
A career in law enforcement placed Derrick in rooms most people never enter, and beside people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Those experiences taught him that a badge gives you authority — it doesn't give you character.
Character matters most when pressure is highest. The stories that come out of that world — told honestly, without sensationalism — are some of the clearest lessons in character-first leadership there are.
You don't need to wait for the title to start.
